Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the effect of the combination of different doses of organic and mineral fertilizers on yield and quality traits of yam varieties of the complex D. cayenensis - rotundata. Measured parameters were yield, nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) contents of the yam tubers, dry weight matters and organoleptic qualities of the resulting food. The highest tuber yields were obtained with the mineral fertilization rate of N90P40K60 kg.ha-1for both varieties. The yam tuber N and K contents increased with increasing rates of mineral fertilizer, which resulted in reduced dry weight matter. The organoleptic quality of the food from the yam tuber was rated good regardless of the fertilization treatment. The study demonstrated that mineral fertilization at the rate N90P40K60 increased yam tuber yield by 25% as compared to the control treatment without altering the quality of the food from yam tubers.
