LES DETERMINANTS DE LA MORTALITE DES ENFANTS DE MOINS CINQ ANS EN COTE D’IVOIRE

Abstract

Mortality information’s are country socio-economic and health progress indicators. Understanding the factors underlying child mortality increase remains a legitimate concern for sub-Saharan Africa countries. The interest of this paper is to highlight the determinants of children under five years mortality in Côte d'Ivoire. Using data from the DHS 1994 and EIS 2005, we considered three dependent variables such as infant and child mortality (Mij), child mortality (Mj) and infant mortality (Mi), the explanatory variables are the factors constituting demographic, socioeconomic, and those related to mother attitudes known in the literature as Africa child mortality determinants. From a logistic regression model, we enjoyed the role of different factors in child survival. We notice the birth rank of the child (1st and 7th and +), the low birth interval (less than two years), the fact that the mother hadn’t practiced prenatal visit and her non-education. We recommended in addition to improving the reproductive health and family planning services, the act in favor of girls education. Women should also be encouraged to reduce number of children, space births and practice pregnancy visits.
